Iron Stars - amethyst

Amethyst is a new citizen of the Celestial Freebooters Republic living on the planet Juroli. Though the tide of living metal that ravaged the landscape since the time of The Scream has been stopped , though the inert metal remains. The Freebooters Republic has spared no expense in acquiring the services of scouts and trackers to round up anyone with a background in biology or taxonomy, and it did not take them long to investigate the rumors of a Geon clan on the planet with a significant number of psychics. The offer of funds and material support for the tribe was too good an offer to pass up, and Amethyst quickly found themselves contacted by a CFR representative. The job was simple, stay with a herd of Mossgrubbers, animals that feast on metal, and ensure they are not threatened, and are settling into their new home. These beasts are doing vital work chewing their way through the inert metal that covers large sections of the planet, and in their wake, fertile land flourishes. Having arrived in a dusty no name settlement the night before, there is a knock on the door of the bunkhouse where Amethyst and two other Geon from the tribe have been given temporary quarters as they remain in the area, and begin their work. @Amethyst (no need to ping on a reply, just so you know where your thread is)

"I have a cat and dog at home. They eat meat but they leave me alone. And these things are slow enough. I'm sure you'll be fine" the handler says. A navigation point with a route of where to lead the herd is downloaded to your pad, and with a final "good luck" you and your companions are left with enough equipment for a few days in the wilds, and the pack of creatures to supervise. They seem compliant enough when gently tapped with a stick, and they get moving, content to follow you wherever you are leading them. (d10 as we head into the wilderness. Stopping the consuming tide and now cleaning it up has won the CFR the temporary allegiance of the people ,now it is on adventuring teams like yours to continue. The end of the woods has a few small rodents skittering away as you approach. As the grubbers see the metal and begin to munch you notice one of them lags behind the group and is digging at something in the ground that you cannot see around its bulk

There is nothing on the case about who it might belong to, but there are many photographs inside to go through. Around you, the mossgrubbers lose interest in the case upon seeing the giant metal blobs where the consuming tide was halted, and they eagerly begin to eat. As they pass over their small grazing areas, soil is once again exposed to the sunlight. Rains will come, and this land might be useful for something once again. The two creatures are stalking the herd, drawing slowly closer to pounce on either one of you, or one of the grubbers near the edges of the pack furthest from help. You're not sure what presents a more tempting target at the moment, but are confident you will be in danger soon.

The grubbers settle in to eating at this new location, slowly freeing plants and fertile ground from the inert living metal, leaving lumps of purified common and rare ingots behind to be collected. There is a distant rumble of a motor as a truck from the settlement comes to collect what the grubbers have dropped so far.

The truck parks with the handler from earlier, along with two other locals who begin collecting whatever the grubbers have dropped in this area. You can see a distant mountain with its peaks wreathed and hidden behind thick cloud. A lightning storm plays out in the heights though you cannot see snow or rain from down here. None of the locals seem bothered by it. Some of the liquid metal solifified about a third of the way up the impressive heights before it lost momentum and was unable to consume any higher. With just this small pack of grubbers, cleaning up an entire world might be the work of a generation. "I heard you ran into some trouble this morning" the representative says as he disembarks from the vehicle and approaches you

“Yeah. I was trying to get away from some hounds back there.”

“Predators this close to the town. That’s a bad sign.” He agrees. “I see you looking at the mountain out there. It’s rumored nobody’s ever explored out there. I think your talents are wasted guarding the flock. You’ve proved you can handle something bigger. So what do you think. Interested ?”

The trio is relieved of their herding duties and are given four days of rations each, enough to easily explore the surrounding countryside. Your initial walk into the forest is easy, and the now inert metal in some areas crunches under your stone feet as you continue moving deeper into the forest. It is late afternoon when you stumble on a clearing in the metallically petrified woods. In this clearing the metal seems to have avoided the area or gone around it. There is no clear indication of why this place was spared when everything around it was not. In the center of the clearing you can see a perfect circle of large stones, each standing tall above the ground. In the center, a shallow pit seems to have hosted a bonfire not too long ago. Three unfortunate adventurers met their death here, their skeletons and knapsacks remain, though their bodies have been picked clean of meat and other soft tissue by scavengers

Koth Hounds are not normally known to attack humans unless they've become old or sick ,similar to the man eating tigers on long lost Earth, but the lack of a biosphere on this world has pushed them to unnatural behavior in the pursuit of their next meal. There was nothing to eat in their bags and no one has stumbled across their resting place to pick through it. Everything remains where it has fallen.

There is a small necklace with an opal teardrop in one of the bags. It has a small diode set into it allowing it to be used as both an art piece and a light at night. The rest looks like average consumer grade outdoors equipment. Locals from one of the nearby settlements are the victims based off an inspection of their clothing and the quality of their survival aids.

Amethyst picks up the necklace and puts it in her bag. “This could be useful at night.” She says a small prayer to help the dead find some peace. Then continues forward. “I should get going. Don’t know if the perpetrator is still around. Best to not stay too long .” She continues forward.

There is a wooden firewatch tower ahead after you and your group walk for another few hours. Late afternoon and the beginning of the setting star lets the group know that the woods are going to become even more dangerous to be walking around in soon. There is power at this station , a red light at the top of the tall structure blinks gently, announcing its presence. A metal ladder leads up the 20m tall structure to a cabin on top ,fitted with telescopes and other signaling devices. The metal has consumed the lower third of the structure but did not spread higher, and most importantly, has left clear access to the ladder leading up.

There is a small power unit that runs off a type B cell that provides energy to the handful of electronics here. The cell has run dry. A small kitchen , a weather mapping computer , a communications computer that has been disabled and a roach popper system are the main appliances. A jury rigged workbench has also been laid out in the space here.

There are no batteries laying around that are not already powering one of the rudimentary machines. Ion lightning is expected within the next few days based on the weather computer. This storm does not come with rain but generatres an enornmous amount of lightning that seeks to make contact with the ground. In places where it hits the conductive living metal, everything for tens of meters around becomes highly electrified with more than enough voltage to kill.

Amethyst considers whether it is better to stay here until the storm passes or leave.

As the second watchman wakes up the night is brought to stark contrast and becomes day by the sudden bolt of violet lightning. A tree near the tower is struck, shattering it and starting a fire.

Beginners Guide to Iron Stars

The fire is about one hundred meters from the base of the tower. This ion storm has charged the air and there are strikes of lightning, but there is no accompanying rain. The forest is dry from the ravages of the liquid metal and it will spread to other combustable material in the surrounding area.

Amethyst will look for anything that might help with the storm.

(I didnt have any explicit resistance to damage mechanics built in to being a Geon, SWN doens't really have damage types like 5e does. Rock and sand are not good conductors but they would still be changed or hurt if lighting hit them, like turning from a rock into a fulgerite)

Amethyst will try to sleep through the storm. She doesn’t really know what else to do.

The fire continues spreading and your companions decide to leave the area. They have no wish to climb back into the firewatch tower to be burned to death.

Amethyst will go look for better shelter away from the fire. She will avoid the lightning best she can.

The fire spreads behind you and there is no sign of your companions. The lighting crackles in the sky overhead turning night to an eerie purple tinged day with every thunder crack and as you stumble through the burning forest for what feels like hours but is likely only minutes you come across a cave. The animals that were living here have left the area , perhaps even recently and this looks to be a sturdy enough shelter from both the fire and the lighting. Distantly you can see the fire watch tower and the secrets it contained catch and burn up like a torch, a tower of flame that can be see for kilometers around.

Amethyst feeling exhausted and worn out. She decides to rest in the cave and look for signs of where her companions might of went in the morning.

The fire rages outside but stops just beyond the firewatch tower as the cleared land around it robs it of fuel. Tired and sore, the morning is smoky and gray and solitary. There are no prints other than yours just outside the cave.

Amethyst checks the surrounding area for any disturbances (bush with torn cloth, leaves that might have been disturbed, any sign of injuries, etc) that might lead to their direction. (edited)

You see no evidence that they have perished in the fire, but the fire has also consumed anything they might have left behind, any tracks, and any tell tale signs of movement like broken branches or bent over grasses. The fire seems to have burned itself out during the night, eventually consuming all the plant and tree matter before running into non combustable metal from the petrified landscape in various directions

Amethyst sighs and continues forward. Maybe she will meet them again but she must prevail. Marching onward past the ashes where the fire once was but keeping an eye out for any dangers. (edited)

The burned lands you are walking through are quiet. With the absence of the trees and any other natural wind breaks there is a dull roar in the background . The walk brings you to the edge of this once verdant section of woods to the place where the liquid metal has petrified the plants here. Giant metal trees glint in the sunlight, and frozen animals are paralyzed mid leap or scurry where the tide of voracious metal overtook them.

Amethyst throws a rock the near area where the animals were frozen. (edited)

The animals do not react. The metal clangs harmoniously at the rock impact but otherwise the creatures remain as they are.

Amethyst tries to recall if she knows anyone that may know anything about this or if she has seen it before.

In the time before The Scream there were scientists on a station orbiting this planet that were working on a project. This project involved living metal that could b e bound to a starship hull and would allow for self repair. This would have been especially valuable in frontier space such as this where shipyards were few and far between. Their station was destroyed by The Scream and upon its crash into the planet the liquid metal escaped containment, swallowing up any biomass it could find until it reached a critical mass and stopped. Entire regions of the planet are covered by this chromatic metal and much of it was rich woodland and fertile farmland needed to keep the population of this world, human and Geon alike alive. The population is facing a slow creeping starvation crisis until the mossgrubbers can complete their work, eating the metal and restoring the verdant condition of the planet.

Leaving the petrified animals and woodland behind you come to the base of the mountain. Metal has wrapped up the bottom third as it swallowed up the rocks, trees, and other alpine wildlife. There is a glittering patch of ground a third of the way up the mountain, a two hours walk from where you are now by your estimation.

(yeah that would make it a 4 or 5 but an easy check DC is a 6, so no matter what this would fail) Amethyst makes several circles of the peak trying to get an idea of the best path to the summit. After figuring out the best approach, hand over hand they attempt to make the climb toward the glittering patch of rocks high above, but cannot reach it. Handholds and footholds run out or become too shallow to be safely used, and the climb is aborted in the early hours of the afternoon.

Amethyst decides to find somewhere else to explore since this seems like a dead end.

With the glittering patch of rock at the top of the peaks left behind , Amethyst plots a course back to the settlement they had departed from. The mossgrubber herd is safe and they believe they’ve at least seen what there is to see in this area. Their information will be added to the towns map and future groups of explorers and curious townsfolk will be better off when traveling the region. It is close to sunset when the Geon returns and sees their two companions likewise escaped the fire. )3xp, 5000 credits. This should get you to level 2)
